Jaisalmer Fort – The Living Fort of the Golden City
Perched majestically on Trikuta Hill in the heart of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, the Jaisalmer Fort — also known as Sonar Quila or Golden Fort — is one of the largest fully preserved fortified cities in the world. Unlike most forts, it remains a “living fort”, with residents, shops, temples, and homes thriving within its walls.
🏛️ Historical Background
Built by: Rawal Jaisal in 1156 CE
Dynasty: Bhati Rajputs
Purpose: Defensive fortification and royal residence
Material: Yellow sandstone, which gives the fort its golden glow, especially at sunrise and sunset
Over the centuries, Jaisalmer Fort witnessed numerous battles, sieges, and royal ceremonies. Its strategic location on the ancient trade route between India and Central Asia made it an important hub for merchants and caravans.
🌟 Architecture & Structure
The fort rises 76 meters above the surrounding plains and is enclosed by massive thick walls punctuated by seven gates, each historically used for defense.

Raj Mahal (Royal Palace): Once the residence of the Bhati rulers, featuring intricate latticework, balconies, and courtyards.
